Jewish Home of San Francisco

Discovery, Equity, and Beauty

At Jewish Home of San Francisco, a senior living nonprofit, wellbeing is understood as a balance of physical, social, and emotional health. To support this, we helped transform their nine-acre, 130-year-old campus into a vibrant oasis, guided by the principles of discovery, equity, and beauty. The redesign includes two new buildings: the Frank Residences (190 memory care and assisted living units) and Byer Square, a public community center, along with three distinct parks and visible green spaces. The Frank Residences are designed for aging in place, with bold, bright colors that aid visibility and encourage engagement. Units feature accessible kitchens, bathrooms, and fixtures to accommodate changing needs. Memory care units are arranged in smaller social groups with features like accent paint and backlit toilets to aid wayfinding. Open residential-style kitchens in the dining areas foster a full-sensory cooking experience, while separate dining rooms encourage family interaction. Byer Square focuses on wellness and community, with spaces for socializing, fitness, arts, and dining. The Frank Residences’ lobby, open to the park, serves as a gathering space where residents connect amidst artwork and natural light. A fireplace unites the living and dining areas, and meandering paths connect indoor and outdoor spaces, breaking down barriers between the built environment and nature. Expansive windows and high ceilings enhance residents' personal spaces, bringing the campus and its green surroundings into view. The design emphasizes both beauty and function, with spaces that adapt to emotional and physical needs. Byer Square provides intimate, restorative spaces, while communal areas and outdoor spaces promote social connection. This design creates an inclusive environment where every resident, regardless of care level, can express themselves and engage with the community.
