Harder Mechanical

Where Work Gets Done

As a fifth-generation family business in Portland, Harder Mechanical needed a newly updated, modern headquarters designed to last another 80 years. With a commitment to reinvention, they desired an innovative showcase office that reflected their expertise in millwork and high-tech manufacturing. Our design resulted in a striking brick building crafted from renewable cross-laminated timber (CLT), enhancing the Elliott neighborhood with a blend of timelessness and modernity. The new Harder Mechanical headquarters emphasizes daylighting, efficient space planning, and opportunities for employee interaction. Upon entering, visitors are welcomed by a reception desk and a robust metal and concrete staircase leading to a spacious second level, highlighted by skylights that illuminate the two-story atrium. The interior design combines open floor plans with private offices and conference rooms along the perimeter, ensuring abundant natural light reaches all areas through skylights and interior glazing. The industrial aesthetic balances raw and refined elements, warm and cool color palettes, and exposed yet precise details throughout. This design embodies Harder Mechanical’s resilience and success over decades, establishing a timeless workspace that reflects their commitment to the future.
