Anthology of Beaverton

Connected, Comprehensive Care

Adjacent to the boundary limit for Washington County and two of Beaverton’s primary roads, Anthology of Beaverton is a buffer between a residential neighborhood and commercial zone, establishing a secure, inclusive haven for its aging residents. Containing three tiers of individualized, 24-hour care, Anthology of Beaverton’s community programming is designed to engage and accommodate the specific needs of each group of seniors – which includes Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care. Shared amenity spaces encourage the groups to socialize, mingle, and interact with one another, while an immersive interior design tied to the landscapes and ecosystems of Oregon connects residents to their youthful adventures and prevents them from feeling cut off from the world around them. In all aspects of its design, Anthology of Beaverton considers, respects, and supports the unique needs of each of its seniors, making it an unparalleled place for the young at heart to grow old.

An oasis inspired by the rich biodiversity of Oregon’s various landscapes, the interior design of Anthology of Beaverton reflects a harmonious blend of comfort, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, ensuring a warm and inviting space for all residents. Just like the state of Oregon, the interior landscape of Anthology is constantly changing as it is traversed. This design seamlessly integrates elements of nature, evoking the serene beauty and diverse ecosystems found throughout the state to differentiate amenity spaces and create unique experiences for aging residents. The color palette draws from the lush greenery of Oregon’s old-growth forests, with earthy tones of moss, fern, and sage creating a serene, peaceful atmosphere. Accents of warm browns and blues reflect the rugged coastline and tranquil waters of the Pacific Northwest. Soft hues of the high desert and painted hills are seen in memory care spaces to calm residents, while material choices and finishes in shared community rooms recall the crystals and minerals hidden deep within Oregon’s caves. Amenities for every level of leisure or active amusement let seniors enjoy Anthology precisely how they want. Shared areas such as the fitness center, yoga room, and the community room flex space that includes shuffleboard and a pool table provides opportunities to stay active, while the theater, lounge, and hair and nail salon allow residents to rest and relax while still being social. Each care group has their own dining area, as well as in-unit kitchens for the IL and AL residents. The grab & go coffee bar bistro gives residents another option for a quick bite throughout their day. A specialty family room and lounge with a kitchen called “Mother’s Bistro” grants the relatives of memory care residents the ability to visit and cook meals with their loved ones. Smaller amenity spaces such as the family rooms have stone fireplaces and other details that add texture and variation to the space while helping it feel warm, inviting, and homelike.

Located on a site that is partially a protected wetland, Anthology of Beaverton ingeniously integrates itself into the surrounding landscape by maximizing its usable space. Faced with a unique set of challenges stemming from concerns about soil liquefaction and light pollution requirements, the design team embraced atypical solutions like the use of piles in the foundation to efficiently fit the usable site volumes together while addressing both environmental and structural concerns. The Anthology building itself is spread out, separating the Assisted Living and Independent Living programs into two distinct portions of the site. Though they are physically separate, the two programs are connected by shared amenity spaces like the outdoor courtyards that contain BBQ grills and fire pits, enabling residents to stay active, enjoy fresh air and sunlight, and sidestep feelings of being stuck inside. Designed and bid during the pandemic, it was necessary to pivot to more cost-effective means of construction. Working collaboratively with the owner and contractor, cost savings were achieved in a way that improves Anthology's design. Expensive siding panels were infilled with lap siding, adding more depth to the structure, and glulam columns were added to the entry canopy, adding structural support. Two levels of wood framing above a PT slab on the Memory Care wing also improve structural efficiencies, increasing ceiling heights for that portion of the building and allowing the inclusion of additional resident units to maximize the scale of care provided.
