Mirabella ASU, the world’s first senior living high-rise, offers a unique opportunity for senior alumni to live and learn on the Arizona State University campus. This 20-story tower combines luxury condo living with senior care, providing independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing all in one place while facilitating intergenerational connections and access to lifelong learning.
Located in the Sonoran Desert, Mirabella ASU’s design had to overcome complex environmental challenges, but with expertise in senior living, hospitality, and higher education, we worked with Pacific Retirement Services to create a space that is as functional as it is inspiring. As our third collaboration with PRS, we applied insights from existing Mirabella communities to refine the design, from soundproofing and ergonomic kitchen layouts to innovative finishes that elevate the senior living experience.
The tower’s design draws inspiration from the desert landscape, using stone and earthy metal finishes to echo the rock formations surrounding Tempe. Subtle references to Arizona State University are woven throughout the building, from lighting elements and flooring patterns that recall the iconic ASU sun logo to artwork and displays celebrating the university’s alumni and history. Residents can engage with ASU’s legacy in spaces like the library, which highlights notable alumni authors, and the game room, where the achievements of ASU athletes are celebrated.
The unit designs reflect the practical insights from our previous Mirabella projects, with high-quality, low-maintenance materials like quartz and porcelain, along with personalized storage and lighting. Sustainable features, such as energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, and insulated windows, blend seamlessly with the interior. Large windows offer expansive views and abundant natural light, while circadian lighting on care floors supports the natural sleep/wake cycles of residents.
Mirabella ASU also boasts exceptional amenities, including four dining venues, a fitness center, a pool, an auditorium, an expansive library, and crafting areas. Shared spaces like a student art gallery, woodshop, beauty salon, and bistro foster connections between residents and ASU students, creating a vibrant, intergenerational community where learning, creativity, and connection thrive.
