UW Mercer Court

Supporting Community, One Individual at a Time

Revitalizing an underutilized site at the southwestern edge of the campus, Mercer Court provides 900 beds as part of an initiative to upgrade much of The University of Washington’s on-campus student housing facilities, many of which are 30 to 50 years old. Inspired by a kaleidoscope, Mercer Court reflects the dynamic nature of community. Just as individual elements create a vibrant scene within a kaleidoscope, the design fosters interaction among students. This theme is present in both the programming and the intricate details of the interiors, which encourage exploration, gathering, and rejuvenation. Comprising five buildings, Mercer Court features the Husky Grind Café at the main entrance, acting as a hub for students. The two-story great room serves as a social anchor, with areas for games, lounging, and dining radiating from a central fireplace. Study nooks on the second level provide quieter spots for focus. The design promotes community at multiple scales. Music rooms and large study areas connect with vibrant plazas and courtyards, while rooftop lounges offer stunning views. Residential options range from studios to six-bedroom apartments, with ensuite facilities for privacy. Materials evoke the kaleidoscope theme, with wood cladding on the fireplace and colorful patterns throughout both public and private spaces. Lobbies are enhanced with back-lit glass panels, and signage incorporates vibrant elements. Mercer Court supports students as individuals and as a community, fostering a strong sense of connection that enhances the spirit of the University of Washington.
