Avanza 490

Culturally Inspired

Avanza 490, the first fully affordable housing project to break ground in San Francisco’s Mission District in a decade, offers a meaningful home for formerly homeless and extremely low-income families and individuals. The interior design prioritizes wellness and livability while meeting the city’s affordable housing needs. With 81 family-friendly apartments, this seven-story, mixed-use building was developed in close collaboration with community agencies to provide residents with on-site services, including stabilization programs, health and wellness resources, and leadership training—all designed to help them thrive without having to leave the building. Despite the emphasis on affordability, the interior design elevates the experience, creating spaces that express pride, empowerment, and upward mobility. The building’s name, Avanza 490—meaning “move forward”—resonates deeply with the predominantly Latinx community of the Mission District, embodying hope and progress. The design draws inspiration from the area's rich history, with vintage car photos nodding to South Van Ness’s automobile culture. Garage doors are incorporated as functional elements, allowing residents to expand or divide the large community room on the ground level, providing a flexible space that can adapt to a variety of needs. The apartments are designed with personalization in mind, offering spaces that encourage residents to make them their own. In addition to aesthetic and functional flexibility, the design includes special accommodations for residents with mobility or hearing impairments. Four apartments are equipped with enhanced accessibility features, such as flashing strobes for emergency alerts and visitor notifications, ensuring that all residents have the support they need to feel safe and independent. Avanza 490’s interior spaces blend creative design, community focus, and accessibility, helping to create a place where residents can truly feel at home and empowered to move forward.
