Daimler Truck North America

Human-centered, Modern Workplaces

Designed from the inside out, the Daimler Truck North American headquarters exemplify a seamless blend of architecture and interior design, using the building’s depth and orientation to maximize views and natural light. Solid walls run perpendicular to a unitized curtain wall, while an offset core enables more workstations to enjoy river-facing windows. Closed rooms are strategically positioned at the center to preserve sunlight and vistas, fostering an open, airy atmosphere. Internal departments span two floors, connected by an open, interconnected stairway on every level. The ground floor boasts a large covered outdoor area, inviting employees to enjoy their lunches by the river, even in Portland's drizzles. A striking full-size Daimler truck showcased in the lobby serves as a centerpiece, inspiring employees while highlighting the quality products they create. The LEED Platinum-certified building reflects a commitment to sustainability, producing 67% less carbon than the average U.S. office. Key features include photovoltaic systems, solar thermal water heaters, and radiant floors, with water use reduced by 40% through low-flow fixtures. The landscaping naturally routes stormwater to the Willamette River watershed, ensuring eco-friendliness. This innovative workspace translates Daimler’s brand values into a dynamic environment, moving away from traditional layouts to flexible workspaces that can transform into meeting rooms. Research shows that smaller group settings foster community and collaboration, which influenced the design of “neighborhoods” within the office, promoting spontaneous interaction among employees.
