Perched high on a hill at the center of campus, the Bellevue College Student Success Center embodies the pivotal journey undertaken by students each year. It serves as both a trailhead and a map to the next stage of their educational adventure—a welcoming space for guidance, reflection, and celebration of achievements. Spanning 71,462 square feet, this progressive design-build project is laid out to reflect the student experience. Entry services are located on the first floor, student support services on the second, and success services on the top floor. Our design team worked closely with the Washington State Department of Enterprise Services (DES) to navigate various challenges while keeping the project on track for LEED Silver certification. The interior design creates intentional paths for discovery, reflection, and connection, paralleling a student’s collegiate experience with the ascent of a mountain hike—celebrating milestones and fostering exploration along the way. The top floor features the Commons, an ideal event space that offers expansive views of downtown Bellevue and Seattle, where students can come together to celebrate achievements and forge personal connections. In contrast to the previous building’s cramped and unclear circulation, our new design employs tactile details to guide students through open, vertical spaces. Light and warm colors direct them toward areas for assistance, while special nooks and enlarged landings provide opportunities to pause and reflect. The new workspaces accommodate diverse functions and foster an environment filled with natural light. Throughout the design process, we advocated for each department, ensuring their unique needs were met while promoting shared priorities of flexibility and collaboration. By strategically connecting departments that previously operated in silos, the Student Success Center enhances every student's experience and access to educational opportunities, making it a vibrant hub of support and inspiration for the Bellevue College community.
