Mercy Othello Plaza

Adaptable Community Design

At Mercy Othello Plaza, the interior design was driven by a commitment to creating a community-oriented environment for Seattle’s low-income residents. This six-story, transit-oriented development blends vibrant, adaptable spaces with practical amenities to foster connection and well-being. The building houses 108 affordable one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, each supported by on-site services from Mercy Housing Northwest, creating a dynamic multicultural community. The heart of Mercy Othello Plaza is its large, flexible community room on the second floor. Designed for a variety of uses, the room serves as a classroom, event space, and dance hall, adapting to the changing needs of residents. A central partition divides the room to accommodate after-school programs, ESL classes, and other gatherings. Adjacent spaces, including a community kitchen and computer room, further support Mercy Housing Northwest’s mission to provide resources and training for residents. The second-floor community space extends outdoors to a sunny upper-level courtyard. The courtyard, with its light-colored surfaces, feels open and inviting, offering a safe place for children to play while parents relax nearby. The entry, community room, and courtyard all open toward the south, maximizing natural light and creating a bright, welcoming atmosphere. A plaza area at the building’s base connects directly to a nearby transit stop, enhancing the building’s accessibility and fostering community interaction. With Mercy Housing Northwest’s offices located on the ground floor, Mercy Othello Plaza serves as an anchor for the neighborhood, bringing services and a greater sense of presence to the area. The interior design of this mixed-use development creates a space where residents can come together, thrive, and feel connected to their community.
