Songbird

Inspired by Rhythm and Jazz

Songbird Apartments, designed to reintroduce diverse communities displaced by gentrification to Portland’s historic Eliot neighborhood, embodies the vibrant spirit of the people it serves. Inspired by the rhythm and energy of jazz, Songbird’s interior design brings this energy to life through thoughtful color, texture, and art. The building serves very low- to low-income families, with priority given to long-time residents and those displaced by the neighborhood’s changing landscape. The design of Songbird is rooted in collaboration. BRIDGE worked closely with local community leaders to ensure the design reflected their values and needs. Through community feedback, we curated a bright, dynamic color palette that infuses life and rhythm into the shared spaces, while also using color as a wayfinding tool to help residents navigate the building. These bold, playful accents—paired with natural materials—create a welcoming environment for all. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a wood-slat ceiling that spans the lobby and community room, bringing a natural warmth to the space. This theme of warm, inviting materials continues throughout the building, with wood elements framing accent colors in the elevator lobbies, marking each floor’s distinct identity. The community room, a focal point of the design, is strategically connected to the outdoor courtyard, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. The room is designed not just for socializing, but as a hub for community services, offering residents access to job training, life skills coaching, and other support services. Throughout the building, local artists have created art that ties back to the musical and cultural vibrancy of the neighborhood, further reinforcing the connection between the community and the space. With a balance of functionality and style, the design of Songbird Apartments offers not just a home, but a sense of pride, creating a space where residents feel uplifted and connected to their neighborhood.
