The Perch PDX

Modern History in North Portland

Visually-stimulating from all angles, the façade of The Perch PDX uses industrial materials and warm tones to evoke a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of the 1950’s-style hotels that came before it. The Perch PDX takes a simple block shape and reimagines it by experimenting with geometry. Built with the intention of enhancing the neighborhood instead of distracting from it, this structure offers sweeping views of the city from the Southwest-facing sky lounge. Ground floor retail and a sky lounge bring new life to the community of residents, neighbors, and light rail commuters alike.

The Perch PDX gives you the best of both world: a taste of the energy in North Portland and a quiet, family-friendly appeal. With elongated balconies and a relaxing sky lounge, residents can enjoy their views of the city while passersby can enjoy the warmth and charm exuded by this mixed-use apartment building. Designed with a horizontal emphasis that evokes a sense of motion and memories of vintage hotels that have occupied this street in the past, this project sits in the midst of a vibrant and upcoming neighborhood ideal for families and young professionals alike. Its location along a light rail line corridor offers an opportunity to build up more housing and retail nearby, allowing The Perch PDX to be the center of the action. Seven stories tall, with 141 residential units and amenities, are grounded by first floor retail storefronts that activate the street level. Blending industrial and residential qualities, including exterior materials like dark brick, wood, concrete. Simple colors and cedar wood warm up the exterior and geometric shapes create texture throughout the exterior, a push and pull between the dark brown, bronze, and white paneling. Using clever techniques within the parameters of zoning regulations, our architects maximized square footage for residents by creating large balconies and bays, adding more value to the units and offering beautiful views of the evolving city as well as Forest Park. Our architectural team did not overlook the details: A sculptural element of six vertical wood lines scale the façade was added early in the project to create further character. The soffit colors correspond to the façade’s bays and recesses, creating continuity and flow. An industrial look, we designed this building with the idea of complementing the neighborhood around it, not taking away from it. Built for the future with inspiration from the past, The Perch PDX enhances the travel between neighborhood to city. Subtle touches in the materiality and massing create clean, simple, quality architecture that will withstand the test of time in this unique neighborhood.
