M@ College

Functional Yet Fun

Creating dense student housing just one block south of San Diego State University, nestled among single-family homes, we embraced community outreach and collaboration to ensure aesthetic and social compatibility with the rest of the surrounding neighborhood. We actively listened to project and community stakeholders, allowing us to refine the project’s scale and aesthetic, aligning both SDSU's and the community’s needs. The design for M@ College introduces 327 beds in one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments, meeting the university's density requirements. Our approach focuses on durable, cost-effective choices that are playful and unexpected, influenced by local context. The site presented unique challenges and opportunities, leading to a departure from the traditional Spanish Colonial aesthetic favored by SDSU; neighbors expressed a desire for a more contemporary California style. This insight allowed us to shift the color and material palette, incorporating vibrant accents against a backdrop of earth tones. Inspired by San Diego’s seaside cliffs, the main stairs zigzag down, revealing a community room adorned with abstract wave-pattern wallpaper and guiding visitors toward the open courtyard and community space. Acoustic baffles, arranged in wave patterns on the ceiling, help suppress noise from gatherings, while flooring variations in concrete, carpeting, and LVP create dynamic shapes within the space. Each apartment unit is designed for ample daylight, with views toward the courtyard or the neighborhood, featuring durable finishes to withstand student life. High ceilings and clean lines contribute to an open feel, with most bedrooms including dedicated bathrooms and stainless finishes, some even with full kitchens. Recognizing that student life extends beyond academics, we incorporated a surfboard wash and storage station, addressing the needs of students who enjoy the local surf culture. This practical feature emphasizes functionality while being deeply informed by the lifestyle of our primary users, making M@ College a vibrant and welcoming home away from home for SDSU students.
