C-TRAN Campus Operations Building

A Restful Stop

The center of a multi-phase campus facility expansion created to house, train, and be a restful stop for all of C-TRAN's staff, the operations building’s interior demonstrates the perks of working for C-TRAN. Guiding C-TRAN and working with the construction team to supervise the handoff between construction phases, we walked through the different users and uses to accommodate their needs and the flow of buses, stretching the building to save as much money as possible. Tied to the exterior architecture in an understated, natural way, the interior of C-TRAN's operations building embraces the mass timber structure and CMU exterior to create a cohesive environment for employees, management, and drivers-in-training to begin and end their journeys in. Mass timber connections can be seen throughout the structure, solidifying the workplace campus’ status as Ankrom Moisan’s first completed mass plywood structure. While the operations building contains campus resources used to train new drivers and maintenance workers alike, the building also houses amenities for drivers to utilize between shifts. Drivers can spend time in the fitness center, the computer facilities, or in a quiet sleep room that can be used to take naps, uninterrupted. A patio break area establishes an inside-outside connection and experience that opens towards the site’s maintenance facility. Although it’s not a courtyard, the patio grants employee's grand views of the service yard through glazed windows and provides a nice sitting and dining experience for lunch breaks in all types of weather. The subtle inclusion of C-TRAN's color palette and materials that reference transportation, like tile products that emulate tire treads, embrace C-TRAN's company culture and demonstrate why it’s such a great place to work.
