CCC Meridian Gardens

Housing that Heals

As an affordable housing development that’s part of Central City Concern’s Division Continuum, CCC Meridian Gardens offers residents a degree of independence and freedom not typically seen in supportive housing. Onsite services for individuals transitioning from homelessness or experiencing a substance abuse disorder are just one of the ways that Meridian Gardens supports its residents. Embracing the tenets of trauma-informed design, CCC Meridian Gardens ensures that residents of all backgrounds feel welcome. 65 units of permanent supportive housing along with 20 deeply affordable units take the shape of both single-room occupancy (SRO) and studio units. Common areas provide everything from shared kitchens and lounges to communal showers so that residents are able to live their lives to the fullest and build community while going about their days. The ground floor’s entry lobby and reception area include interview rooms for the intake of new residents as well as custom-made side tables made from the wood a tree taken from the site. Additionally, reclaimed wood benches are located in each elevator lobby to add a touch of natural warmth. Donated fine art is scattered throughout the facility, while a custom mural depicts two local community leaders from Portland’s Hispanic population, tying into CCC’s “Puentes” program. Other amenities for the benefit and enjoyment of residents include laundry and bike storage rooms, private meeting rooms, a large group meeting room, and an outdoor courtyard with a plethora of seating, a ping pong table, and a smoking shelter. Each of the building’s four floors grants an additional level of autonomy as residents go up, with the independent studio units being on the top level. Each floor also has its own accent color to easily and visually differentiate uses and create a unique identity. Throughout each of the floors, natural feeling materials blend with a soft color palette to create a sense of calm and brightness. Common-space corridors include windows to bring in natural light and establish sightlines for both resident and staff benefit without creating a feeling of surveillance and distrust Every space within the building creates a supportive, healing atmosphere dedicated to safety and rehabilitation.
