CCC Cedar Commons

Community-Building Support

As permanent supportive housing intended for people struggling with homelessness and drug addiction, CCC Cedar Commons sets aside both single resident occupancy (SRO) and affordable studio units, establishing a clear path to recovery and stability for its residents. While much of the building is residential, a wing of Level 1 is dedicated to support, allowing for easy access to CCC’s healing services, and for some separation between home and treatment. When residents first come into Cedar Commons, they pass through the intake room, where staff assess their needs. These intake interview rooms double as private therapy rooms or physician exam rooms when needed, while larger community rooms – used for meetings like AA, NA, and group therapy – are found right around the corner. Adjacent to this intake room is a central team room for all social workers and supportive housing staff that work in CCC Cedar Commons. The reception desk for Cedar Commons looks directly towards the lounge area, which in turn has a glass door leading into the kitchen area, cementing sightlines and visual connections as a big design consideration for the building. A central circulation stair opens the lobby up as residents enter the space, adorned with a feature light that hangs from the double height ceiling. As residents traverse the different levels, colored number decals provide wayfinding assistance for easy navigation, adding infidelity to each level. Driven to fulfill the residents’ needs of safety, security, and flexibility, CCC Cedar Commons is designed to encourage communal gathering and socialization. Shared amenities on both Level 1 and 2, such as communal kitchens, lounges, and showers keep residents from isolating themselves. The two kitchens include full ranges and ovens, allowing residents to congregate, cook meals, and hang out. Smaller, more intimate settings are available for those wanting a place to relax away from the larger public spaces. Connections to daylight abound throughout the building; there are windows at the end of every corridor and in all the amenity spaces, providing views of the courtyard and allowing light to pour in. From top to bottom, CCC Cedar Commons gives its residents the support they need to transform their lives.
